Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (MAH)
Santa Cruz, CA

Gyroscope collaborated with the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (MAH) to design a plaza outside of the museum that welcomes families to Downtown Santa Cruz. Through a collaborative process with Museum Staff, Gyroscope designed an engaging art installation and artistic pathways to attract audiences to the MAH. The outdoor lounge serves as a creative hub for Downtown and supports MAH’s year-round cultural events in Abbott Square. The 10,000 square-foot Plaza includes an iconic sculpture created from buoys, a new entry for the Museum, and seating for families and cafe goers.

Nina Simon, Executive Director of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, reflects on the new public art installation and MAH's experience working with Gyroscope: "I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all the work you did to help bring this project to where it is today. Every day I walk out of the building onto Abbott Square I am ASTOUNDED by the beauty of the Beacon sculpture and the delight it brings to everyone I see. When we were planning it, I assumed that there would be something about its installation that would make it less than what I had dreamed. Instead, it is more. Thanks to all of you. Thank you for bringing playfulness and creativity and quality get-it-done-ness to this project."

Opened: Fall 2015
